We cannot control the winds, but, we can adjust our sails…

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind.
She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her.
She told her boyfriend, ‘If I could only see the world, I will marry you.’

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off,
she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend.

He asked her, ‘Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?’
The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of
his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn’t expected that. The thought of
looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left her in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying:
‘Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before they were yours, they were mine.’

This is how the human brain often works when our status changes.
Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by
their side in the most painful situations.

Life Is a Gift

Today before you say an unkind word -
Think of someone who can’t speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food – Think of someone who has
nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife – Think of someone who’s
crying out to GOD for a companion.

Before you complain about your children -
Think of someone who desires children but they’re barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house someone didn’t clean or sweep -
Think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive
Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet..

And when you are tired and complain about your job -
Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your
job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another -
Remember that not one of us is without sin and we all answer to one MAKER.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down -
Put a smile on your face and thank GOD you’re alive and still around!

Creating lasting friendships

It’s been about a year and a half since Mike and I left South Florida and the overwhelming void in our lives right now are adult friendships. It’s amazing how ties are formed in elementary, high school, college and in your 20s and once you uproot from your familiar surroundings, you have to start the search all over again.

I have met some nice moms at my son’s daycare and we do the playdates and birthday party events but deep down, I’m hoping to find some friends that we can really get to know more than superficially and hopefully they’ll be at the same stage in life with younger kids so our kids can be friends.

Of course I am super thankful for my long-distance friends that are everywhere from Europe to the Caribbean as well as in a bunch of different states. You guys make life so much more fun and interesting!

Back from Vacation

Ahh the anticpation of vacation

It goes by so fast sometimes, you hardly realize that you left home except for the piles of new laundry. Our family recently took a quick trip to Jamaica for my cousin’s wedding. It was a great time – especially since we were able to ditch the 10-degree weather that hit Charlotte.

Never underestimate the feeling of wearing shorts and flip flops in winter. It was good to see family and friends and we had fun swimming and shopping. We got back to snow of all things. I am thankful for vacations – they make the months fly by

A little patience…

Ok today was one of those days! Every parent has them – you know the ones that start with a cranky child wanting to have his way and ends with a bedtime showdown.

Now I was raised by a strict Sheriff in a one-horse town – it was her way or the highway. However, I’m of the school of letting kids have some leeway but firmly setting boundaries. Well someone must have tipped off my son because he was pushing every limit today.

We had the “lets get ready for school” rumble. The “I want more Cheerios” controversy as well as the “I don’t wanna go to bed” saga. It’s enough to make a mother yell, “Calgon take me away!”.

But then I am reminded of the sweet, loving little man he can be and usually is and I give myself major props for not caving into the toddler standoff. Life is so short that I want to savor it all – the good and the not so good.

Before May, we will have watched family and friends tie the knot.

There’s something infinitely wonderful about a wedding – the promise of things to come.

In Search of Snow

Sugar Mountain

We went for a day trip to Sugar Mountain today in search of some snow and voila – we found lots of the powdery white stuff. One of the cool things about living in Charlotte is the proximity to the beaches and the mountains.

One of the instructors told us they had an 18mth old up there learning to ski. Makes me wonder – hmm maybe next year Jer will be on the bunny slopes.

Girlie Time

I am so excited because my BFF Kris is flying in for a girls’ weekend. We’re going to see the ultimate chick flick (Bride Wars) and probably eat junk and stay up and chat a bunch. I haven’t had a lot of girl time lately since I’m outnumbered at home

So thankful for my girlfriends even though they’re spread all over the globe and hoping to make new ones in Charlotte!

Lately, my little one has been running around the house calling for “Mommy”. You may wonder why I note this since that’s the norm for most toddlers; but my son has been a daddy’s boy from day one. In fact his first word at 8 months was Dada and it took him forever to say Mama.

But I digress…in the last 21 months I’ve had a front row seat to the development of my son and it has been a fascinating show. He has moved from needy infant to unsure baby to now a confident toddler who expresses his desires quite audibly. I love watching all the new phases and I hope to continue making wise choices in raising him

With God, all things are possible

Well here I am on the cusp of a brand new year. The new year is always fresh with possibility and what-ifs so I find myself in the unfamiliar role of waiting on direction. I’ve always been the initiator and go-getter so now that I am still for minutes at a time and listening for God to whisper His plan for my next steps, I thought I’d share my journey with you on this blog.

Writing is so cathartic for me and I hope that through my ups, downs and human frailty that you will be challenged, inspired or at the very least I can be a cautionary tale for those who struggle with letting go and letting God. Please feel free to poke around. My life is an open book – or blog as it were

My Love

The phrase “I Love You” has gotta be one of the most overused word combos of all time. I mean people express love for food, animals, colors, etc.

What is Love, really? I have studied the various types of love: Agape (Love for all mankind), Phileo (Love for Friends and Family) and Eros (Love for your other half). I am happy to say that my life consists of all three and I feel so lucky to have folks in my life who help me become a better person. Life is good when you have love in your heart. It’s a muscle you need to use or you’ll lose.

So I challenge you to get out there and practice some Agape!
